Neom: Alleged Orders to “Kill” for Eco-City Land

Neom: Alleged Orders to “Kill” for Eco-City Land

A former intelligence officer, Col Rabih Alenezi, has disclosed to the BBC that Saudi authorities sanctioned the use of deadly force to clear land for a futuristic desert city, constructed in collaboration with numerous Western companies.

Alenezi claims he was tasked with expelling villagers from a tribe in the Gulf state to pave the way for The Line, a component of the Neom eco-project. Tragically, one villager was fatally shot during protests against their forced eviction.

Both the Saudi government and Neom management have declined to provide any comments on these allegations. Neom, a $500 billion eco-region in Saudi Arabia, forms a crucial part of the Saudi Vision 2030 strategy, aiming to reduce the kingdom’s reliance on oil by diversifying its economy.

The primary endeavour of Neom, known as The Line, is envisioned as a city devoid of cars, spanning a mere 200 meters (656 feet) in width but stretching an impressive 170 kilometres (106 miles) in length. However, it’s been disclosed that only a fraction of the project, approximately 2.4 kilometres, is projected to be finished by the year 2030.

Numerous multinational corporations, including several from Britain, are participating in the construction of Neom. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has depicted the region where Neom is situated as an ideal “blank canvas” for development.

However, despite the government’s assertion that over 6,000 individuals have been relocated for the project, the UK-based human rights organization ALQST suggests the actual number could be higher. Through satellite imagery analysis, He observed the demolition of three villages—al-Khuraybah, Sharma, and Gayal—where homes, schools, and hospitals have been obliterated.

Saudi officials claim that individuals mandated to relocate for The Line project have been provided compensation. However, according to AlQst, the actual compensation disbursed has fallen significantly short of the promised amounts.

Colonel Alenezi asserts that Neom represents the pinnacle of Mohammed Bin Salman’s vision, which is why he adopted a harsh approach to handling the Huwaitat community.
