Victoria Azarenka Withdraws from Wimbledon Due to Injury

Victoria Azarenka will not be participating in this year’s Wimbledon Championships due to an injury that has led her to withdraw from the tournament. Interestingly, there are some unusual similarities between her withdrawal and Aryna Sabalenka’s.

Both athletes sustained injuries at their last Wimbledon preparation event in Berlin, with Sabalenka withdrawing from her match against Anna Kalinskaya due to her injury. Azarenka, on the other hand, completed her match against Kalinskaya but lost the final set 1-6.

Both players’ last grass-court matches before heading to London were against Kalinskaya, and both subsequently withdrew from Wimbledon due to shoulder injuries. While shoulder injuries are common in tennis, the circumstances here are particularly striking. The most unfortunate part for both players is missing out on the tournament, especially given their strong performances on grass last year.

Azarenka announced her withdrawal on social media, sharing details about her injury:

“Hello everyone, It breaks my heart to announce that I won’t be able to compete in the Championships this year. I’ve been battling a shoulder injury that has only gotten worse, despite all my efforts to recover in time. After consulting with my medical team, I’ve decided that withdrawing is the best choice for my health, even though it’s incredibly disappointing to miss out on playing. Thank you all for your support and understanding. I hope to be back on the court soon.”
